did somebody say fall?

keeping it short and welcoming fall. there is something about fall that just makes things feel right. i know most of you are probably sad about the endless summer coming to an end but with the fresh, cool air coming in, im not sure how one could be disappointed. layers of clothing, cinnamon aromas, shades of oranges and browns filling the streets. so, its been a while but this is for fall.

.01 // Something.

something classic, something graphic. something to admire, something to inspire. something sweet + something neat.

SOMETHING1

01. //something classic: i’ve recently picked up and old classic, “The Catcher in the Rye” and am really enjoying it. i don’t recall a thing from the book from the “forced” reading of it in high school as i probably memorized material for quizzes and such but even if i did, i still wouldn’t have understood some of the things written like i do now. something graphic: love this collage illustration by artist Fleur Lux. // something to inspire: this great little company based out of georgia known as So Worth Loving. i follow their feed on instagram and am constantly bombarded by inpsiration, love, and self worth. i dare you to check it out and hate it. (@soworthloving) something to admire:”treat yourself” to this little admiration of this belted leather bomber (truly is a bombshell) jacket from Madewell and these must haves Horrigan boots by Hudson. sigh, if only …. now to important stuff. something sweet: thanksgiving is just around the corner… well a few days away and holiday seasons are a time for major consumption here in America, but if you are going to go in (and you are smart), you’ll do it slenderly. is that a word? here is a SWEET treat recipe from the slender student for an “Apple Pumpkin Pie Bake“. something neat: and last, how neat is this Belgian Dart Set by Best Made Co? gotta have it!

hope you all have a lovely holiday.

sia-rihanna-diamonds sia… and i then i stumbled upon this. How cool is this “TO DO” project that was installed by the New York based public art collaborative, Illegal Art in 2006? As people walk by they were allowed to write down their own “to do” list on a Post-it®. They documented the project as the week continued and installed new Post-its® as the space filled.

Leave the Pieces

at last, the fall weather has arrived in houston. either the weather has re-sparked my creative juices or its the fact that I’m back in my old studio – my home base. a few weeks ago it was flooded due to construction going on above and i was forced to relocate for a few weeks. during those few weeks, aside from being placed in a different studio, i was also dealing with some very traumatic family issues. it felt as if my world was turned upside down – i wasn’t inspired and everytime i needed to make something to ship out i dreaded it – which is not the attitude i want to have. being able to work for myself and create from raw materials is something i am so blessed to be able to do everyday. it made me realize that environment is everything -and that its okay to take a little breather + give yourself time to regroup. we ALL need it. taking time to do so allows you to observe, analyze, and reflect. now im back and am looking forward to the new things that are in store for abbie drue designs. // in the meantime, while I am getting new things together, you can shop our leather + jewelry items at a discount on shout mob shoppe here!

imageimage really loving this mix of textures, color tones, and rough edges. what do you think?

.. + aside from living in the studio and catching up on the blog i have really been diggin’ pinterest. how rad is this best made co. dart set + map? “Everything here is Wonderful”. i had the pleasure of checking out their storefront in TriBeCa NYC a few months ago and it was, as expected, to die for. i will definitely be frequenting often once i move to brooklyn in january.

there is more to life

than living in Houston. here are a few photos from a recent trip to cape cod and new york. it was a very refreshing and unfortunately short trip but i cant wait to be back in the east coast in october! after coming home, i realized it might be time for a move soon. i’ve lived here my whole life and am really ready for something new.

Pipes + Pine DIY

a simple rule that i like to follow is this – keep with the doing. saturday evening i was browsing the internet for industrial tables. i have recently found a new studio space in Houston and a large work table is a MUST. i’m all about the DIY, so i conducted some research, found a few instructions on how to build one, hit up home depot (lets just say more than once and at this point, if you ask me where something is, i would be able to tell you where it was. it took billy + i 4 trips to finally get all of the parts together throughout the entire process. it was frustrating at times but i was determined to get this done. i asked billy if he wanted dinner tonight? meaning – we were not stopping til we finished. the initial frame we built had flanges (feet) on the tops of the pipe that would essentially screw into the wooden tabletop, however, for the heavy duty table we were building using pine lumber on top, we needed more support and an employee at our local home depot suggested we use 90 degree elbows and attach more pipe for a stronger support. the total project cost roughly around $175.00 – the instructions we followed to get started suggested using black pipes, probably because they are cheaper, but we decided to go with the silver metal ones 1- the look was what we wanted and 2-this will last for a long time and nothing cheap ever does. here is the link to where we found our basic instructions + materials.

DSC00984 DSC00972 photo-127DSC00980 photo DSC00983 DSC00975 DSC00978 finished product is 36x72x38 SIDE NOTES: -this is not a one person job. find a buddy + get to work! – always sand along with the grain of the wood. you can use ply-wood as your table top but we chose to go with the pine for a thicker + sturdier top. -when joining 2 small pieces of pipe, DO NOT use a coupling. you will need a union. (we learned the hard way and had to assemble + dissemble multiple times) -you will need heavy duty tools: an electric hand drill, a pipe wrench, screws, + an electric sander.

99¢

consumption. the driving force behind the work of brooklyn based artist Chad Gordon. found through instagram, i quickly was intrigued with the simplicity of his collage work that he creates using imagery + price tags. he started making this style of work in 1999 on his trips to the grocery store. he would take the price tags off loaves of bread + bologna packages, sorry oscar, and began collecting. he now has a quite large collection of tags and stickers of all types that he collages together with old thrift store books, magazines, and other found images. when asked where he finds his inspiration he said, “I live by the Brooklyn Public Library and Brooklyn Museum. I spend a lot of time at both places for inspiration.” this father, husband, and artists has no plans on slowing down anytime soon as he is always thinking about his next move + what else he can create – and if you are wondering, no, his work is not 99 cents.

“I used to think I was the strangest person in the world but then I thought there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same ways I do. I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me too. Well, I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it’s true I’m here, and I’m just as strange as you.”

Happy Birthday to one of the many talented and inspirational artists, Frida

Vintage Junkie + Book Lover

this past weekend was a busy blast. friday was spent prepping for Pop Shop Houston and in turn throwing out my back. yes, my back at the age of 22. such a pain but ive learned that being a maker involves getting hurt and pushing through – no matter what. Pop Shop Houston is a 2 day indie craft fair that features over 40+ houston makers from art, jewelry, leather goods, vintage treasures, food trucks + more. we were thankful + so excited to be apart of this great event with such a welcoming community. after the show, my twin and i headed over to El Rincon Social to view the collaborative works of 2 local artists known by Ack and Eyesore. we love and appreciate the fact that people appreciate our designs and support our growing local company by buying Abbie Drue Designs products, but i believe it is equally important to do the same for others. while at the Ack + Eyesore show, i purchased a rad tee and a limited edition print. mothers day was spent with a quiet dinner over sushi celebrating my mom and the lovely 3 sisters she has given me. everyone should be appreciated and loved no matter what day it is.

when i am not making things, i enjoy nature, reading, long walks on the beach, riding bikes, learning new trades, word search puzzles, getting lost in antique shops, wandering around town and observing the simple things in life. below are a few photos of some of the purchases i made from other vendors at PSP and also some new reads i splurged on following the successful 2 days of the event! treat yo self (yes, you read that right) and treat your brain. it needs fuel too.

seems like forever since i’ve written a post. things have been quite busy around here with prepping + finishing up exams, gearing up for Pop Shop Houston, + sending out new merchandise to our 2 new retailers (wholesale style! yay!)! all good things. we recently were found on Instagram by a shop in Regina, Canada called Norwood + they have officially picked up ADD jewelry! the power of technology is great + we are so thankful to be officially international. as you know, mothers day is around the corner + to show our appreciation to the ladies who have made our hearts beat since day 1, we are giving 15% off all orders (including leather goods) from may 8th – 13th with the discount code LOVE. if you happen to be in the Houston area, swing by Spring Street Studios May 11th + 12th to see a range of handmade, local makers displaying their works. we will be there and would love to see you! hope your week has been swell.

Born on the Bayou

born to be wild and always looking for adventure – thats how i see my life and how its always been since day 1. searching for meaning in overlooked things, exploring the unknown, learning new trades. thankfully i am not alone, as i have my  twin sister annie (my little free spirit) to accompany me as my partner in crime. as the sun rose on saturday, our bags were packed and we were off to the hill country. final destination? wimberley, texas. ever since we were little girls, my mom has been taking me and my 3 other sisters here. this is the place where you can be free – be a river rat – not wash your hair for a couple days (and still be accepted in public) – and simply kick back and enjoy the pure, little things in life. we stayed at our normal spot where our cabin is right on the river – The Rio Bonito. while in wimberley, we swam in the river, hiked a mountain, found some native treasures and basked in the sun.

: )

houston is heating up and the time has come. the time to throw those black skinny jeans on the back burner (yikes) and bring out the shorts + tanks. a little terrifying to part ways since i have 4 pairs of the same black jeans that i pretty much wear daily but it is totally necessary to brave this weather. below are bits and pieces of things that i need, shoes that i love and wear daily (regardless of season), a natural gloss that care for my lips, and an easy throw on tee that will never do me wrong. ( Smiley Cut Off Shorts by LL, dirty sneaks, a simple lip by X. + a basic tee ) easy + breezy. what are your favorite spring/summer wears?

old things. fresh things. and the lady who sparked my drive and ability to believe in myself. luckily, i grew up surrounded with good music. my favorites have always been the rolling stones, creedence clearwater, and james taylor. i found this record at an arts market this weekend where i did a pop-up shop. i am in love with eating fresh and fueling my body with natural things, thanks to the help of my health freak sister. (love you annie). the last photo is a lady who is so dear to me i cant even begin to explain. she helped me believe in myself and lit the fire in my drive.

Basic.

hello. it has been a busy, rough, long, and exciting month. life has been completely unpredictable and non-stop – nothing new. from doing back to back markets, finding new retailers, managing school, and learning a new trade, i think it’s safe to say i have had a lot of down time (ha!).  although the feeling of tiredness hits me every morning when i wake, i keep going. why? because life is short and is not gaurenteed. each day is a gift and a time to share, create, make, and simply keep with the doing. tomorrow marks a special day – the day that abbie drue designs became an established business in the state of Texas and it all started with an idea and a whopping $16 (deep pockets). i am very grateful for this year and all of the blessings and trials it has brought. i am also very thankful to all of the individuals who have supported, influenced, rejected, inspired, and help bring ADD to where it is today. we would not be where we are today without your help and support. thank you.

There will be blood

this weekend has been packed with so many things. from pop-shops and painting the trees blue to learning a new trade. my friend Travis let me come over and showed me the ropes of making goods with leather. leatherwork that is completely hand cut , hand dyed, hand stitched. expect to see quality handmade leather goods making their way to Abbie Drue Designs in the near future. my hands are dyed and there was a little bloodshed in the process but it was completely worth it.

More to come

here is one of the many new displays to come. i love to build and have been envisioning accessory displays and holders for a while now. taking bits of inspiration from here and there + a dash of contemporary hardware. below is the first ADD jewelry display for sale. this one was just made/painted — deer head found in the hill country on a hike I went on a week ago. I was inspired to bring life to something that was dead. there will be a collection of 8-10 pieces up for sale on our website soon

obese? or strikingly realistic? hard to look at? these people seem to think so. —- read here.

*in every article written about this, the word “skimpy” was used to describe the lingerie. there is nothing skimpy about their garments. if the mannequins were size 0-2 and were wearing the same outfit, i guarantee it would be considered “sexy” lingerie. there is nothing wrong with being a women of curves and not being a size 0. jean size does not, and should not, determine your beauty – at least not in my book. as someone who has struggled with their body image, i am happy to see this store in Sweden taking measures to showcase a more representational image for women. feel free to take the poll – its anonymous.
